About Vishamangalesvarar Temple, Thudaiyur

Located in Thudaiyur, Tiruchirapalli district, Vishamangalesvarar Temple stands as a significant spiritual center with roots extending to the early Chola period. Historical inscriptions from the reigns of Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I, along with a 13th-century land measure inscription, attest to its antiquity. The temple's presiding deity, represented by a lingam in the garbhagriha, is known as Vishamangalesvarar, with the goddess called Mangalanayaki. According to tradition, the deity also bears the name Kadambavanesvarar, and the goddess is known as Veeramangalesvari. The temple features a distinctive architectural arrangement where Vishnu appears with his consorts in the position typically occupied by Chandra and Surya in other Shiva temples—a rare configuration. The inner prakara contains shrines dedicated to Vinayaka, Subramania, and Saraswati, while Dakshinamurthy appears in the south section.
