Tiruvasi Mattruraivaradeswarar Temple
About Tiruvasi Mattruraivaradeswarar Temple
Located in Tiruvasi, Trichy district, Tamil Nadu, this Dravidian-style temple enshrines Lord Shiva as Mattruraivaradar, accompanied by his consort Balambikai. The shrine stands as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in Tevaram hymns by saints Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar during the early medieval period. The temple's origins extend over a millennium, with documented patronage from the Hoysala dynasty—King Veera Someswaran donated substantial annual grain offerings in 1253 AD. A celebrated legend recounts how Saint Tirugnanasambandar cured a king's daughter of epilepsy through devotional hymns, resulting in the unique iconographic representation of Lord Nataraja dancing upon a serpent (Sarpa Nataraja). The sanctum features Lord Shiva gracing devotees beneath a Rudraksha canopy, while the rajagopuram displays Nandi with his consort. The temple maintains a Sahasralinga shrine within its prakara and observes major festivals including the eleven-day Vaikasi Brahmmotsavam, Tirukarthikai, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai Arudra Darshan, and Thai Poosam.
