This ancient Shiva temple occupies the northern prakaram of the Meghanathaswamy Temple complex and houses separate sanctums for the presiding deity Sakalabhuvaneswarar (facing east) and his consort Mekalambika (facing south). According to temple lore, the site commemorates Lord Suryan's penance after being cursed by Shiva for misbehaviour toward Aruna. During the Tamil month of Chithirai (21st–27th), sunlight illuminates the Swayambulingam during special pujas. The temple is one of 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems, and features a Chaturmukha Chandikeswarar sculpture in the goshta. The sanctums are often kept closed and require prior arrangement for darshan.
