Located in Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, Paampuranathar Temple holds deep mythological significance as the site where the serpent race, led by Adiseshan, sought redemption from Lord Shiva's curse. According to legend, when Lord Ganesha worshipped Shiva, a serpent adorning Shiva's neck mistakenly believed the worship was directed toward itself, inciting divine anger. Shiva cursed the entire serpent race, stripping them of their powers. The serpents, including Rahu and Ketu, were granted relief through worship on Maha Shivaratri at this location. The temple features a three-stage gopuram facing east, with the principal deity Paampuranathar depicted with a serpent shield. Multiple sanctums house deities including Sattanathar, Malayiswarar, Lord Ganesha, and Saneeswaran. The Adisesha Theertham, a sacred water body opposite the main tower, is believed to cure serpent-related doshas and nightmares. The temple is recognized as the 122nd shrine to receive Thevaram devotional hymns and serves as a rare site in the Navagraha circuit where both Rahu and Ketu receive joint propitiation.
