About Kodiyalur Agastheeswarar Temple
Located in Kodiyalur near Peralam in Tiruvarur district, this traditional heritage temple dates to the 16th century and follows the Kamika Agama tradition. The presiding deity is Agastheeswarar, with the goddess Anandavalli as the consort. The temple holds profound mythological significance as the birthplace of Shani (Saturn) and Yama (the god of death and justice), who are believed to have worshipped here and continue to do so. According to local tradition, Sage Agastyar installed the Shiva Lingam after worshipping at nearby Tirumeyachur. The temple features a square sanctum and is constructed with traditional architectural elements. Subsidiary shrines house Muruga, Vinayaka, Chandikesvara, Navagraha, Bhairava, and Lakshmi. Notably, Shani is depicted here as Mangala Saneeswarar in a benevolent form with abhaya mudra, facing his preceptor Bhairava. Devotees visit seeking blessings for their children's longevity and wellbeing.
