About Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple

Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple stands as a significant Hindu shrine in Thrissur, Kerala, with its primary deity being Unnikrishnan, the child manifestation of Lord Krishna, depicted holding a flute with one hand outstretched. Goddess Bhadrakali, known as Devi Vishnumaya, occupies an equally revered position to the left of the Krishna sanctum. The temple also houses subsidiary shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Sastha, and Brahmarakshasa. Originally located in Edakkalathur village approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Thrissur, the idol was relocated to its present site approximately five centuries ago by devoted villagers who entrusted it to a childless couple. The current architectural structure was commissioned during the 18th century by Raja Rama Varma, known as Sakthan Thampuran, ruler of Kochi, incorporating impressive Kerala-style design elements. The temple maintains a prominent role in Kerala's religious calendar, initiating the Thrissur Pooram festival with the ceremonial Madathil Varavu procession and hosting additional celebrations including Krishna Janmashtami, Navarathri, and Thiru Utsava.
