Temple in the Sea

Maha Shivaratri, the great night of Shiva celebrated in February or March, is the temple's most significant festival. The sacred month of Kartik (October–November) brings Ganga Dhaaraa, a tradition of riverside and seaside worship that connects Caribbean Hindus to practices rooted in India. The temple is located in Waterloo, Carapichaima, in the Couva–Tabaquite–Talparo region of Trinidad, approximately one hour's drive south of Port of Spain via the Uriah Butler and Solomon Hochoy highways. The dry season, from January through May, offers the most pleasant conditions for visiting. The causeway can be breezy and damp, so appropriate footwear for the walk is advisable, though shoes are removed before entering the shrine. Modest dress is expected. Sunset over the gulf during these months is noted as particularly beautiful, making late-afternoon visits especially rewarding.
