Temple du Colosse

Est. 19th century

About Temple du Colosse

The temple was established in the nineteenth century by Indian labourers—known as engagés—who came to work on the sugar estates of eastern Réunion. These workers brought with them their religious practices and cultural memory, establishing places of worship that would anchor their communities in a new land. The temple has since been reconstructed and enlarged by artisans from Madras, reflecting both the passage of time and the ongoing commitment of devotees to maintain and expand the sanctuary. Today it holds the distinction of being Réunion's largest Tamil temple, a testament to the enduring presence and faith of the Tamil Hindu community on the island.

Architecture and Visual Character

The temple displays the architectural vocabulary of South Indian temple design, evident in its vibrant colours and intricate sculptural details. The visual richness of the structure—its bright hues and carved ornamentation—reflects the aesthetic traditions of Tamil Nadu, transplanted and adapted to the Indian Ocean island. The scale and craftsmanship of the building communicate both the spiritual importance of the site and the resources the community has invested in its creation and maintenance over generations.

Visiting the Temple: Timings and Practicalities

The temple welcomes visitors through guided tours, which operate Monday through Saturday. Two tour slots are available each day: one from 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning, and another from 14:00 to 15:00 in the afternoon. The temple is closed on Sundays. Tours are available by reservation, with pricing set at €16 for adults and €9 for children, accommodating groups of up to fifteen people. Guides speak French, Creole, and English, making the experience accessible to visitors of various backgrounds.

The temple is located on Chemin Colosse in the Champ Borne district of Saint-André. Public parking is available nearby, and bus stops serve the area. Private toilet facilities are provided on site. Visitors should contact the temple in advance to arrange their tour and confirm availability, as scheduling depends on guide availability.

What to Expect During Your Visit

A guided tour offers insight into the temple's history, the symbolism embedded in its design, and the spiritual life that animates the space. The guides will help visitors understand the cultural and religious significance of the site within both the broader Tamil tradition and the specific context of Réunion's Hindu heritage. Visitors should approach the temple with respect for its sacred character; modest dress is customary when entering Hindu temples, and shoes are typically removed before entering the inner sanctum. Photography policies may apply, and visitors should ask their guide about any restrictions or protocols specific to the temple.

Accessing the Temple

Saint-André lies on the eastern coast of Réunion. The temple's location in the Champ Borne neighbourhood places it within the town's residential areas. Those travelling by car will find public parking available. Public transport options serve the area via bus stops near the temple. Visitors planning their journey should allow time for the guided tour itself—typically one hour—plus travel to and from the site. It is advisable to book in advance, particularly if visiting with a group, to ensure a guide is available at your preferred time.
