About Taxakeshwar Temple, Mandsaur

Taxakeshwar Temple, locally known as Takhaji Temple, is situated near Bhanpura in Mandsaur district, approximately 22 kilometers from Bhanpura town along the Hinglajgarh road. The temple is dedicated to Taxak, the serpent king who features prominently in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Taxak survived the great Sarpa Satra (serpent sacrifice) performed by Janamejaya after the death of King Parikshit, having obtained a boon from Lord Vishnu. The temple's main idol, believed to have been installed during the 12th century, depicts Taxak with seven serpent hoods and holds a human head in one hand, with representations of Taxak's wife and son flanking the deity. The temple also houses an idol of Lord Dhanvantari and a statue of Lord Shiva. The structure is constructed with stones and bricks, featuring a simple white-tinted design with a small pyramid roof. The temple's setting is enhanced by a natural hot water pool fed by a hot spring cascading from a height of approximately 200 feet, where the Takhali river merges to form a picturesque waterfall.
