About Sorimuthu Ayyanar Temple

Located 12 kilometers from Papanasam and 61 kilometers from Tirunelveli, this sacred temple occupies approximately 21 acres within the dense Kalakkadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. The main deity Sri Sorimuthu Ayyanar is worshipped alongside Mahalinga Swamy and several other sanctums including shrines dedicated to Sangili Bhoothathar, Brahma Rakshasi Amman, Thalavayi Madaswamy, and Pattavarayan. According to local legend, the temple commemorates Muthupattar, a Brahmin who transcended caste boundaries to marry two women from a backward community and ultimately sacrificed his life saving a village cow, with his two wives following him in death. The temple serves as a significant pilgrimage site where devotees, particularly those undertaking journeys to Ayyappa temples, receive their first Rudraksha chain (malai). An estimated 200,000 devotees visit during Thai and Adi Amavasya days, with thousands arriving on every Amavasya, the last Friday of each Tamil month, Panguni Uthiram, and local festival occasions. Devotees maintain a unique tradition at the Pattavarayan shrine where worn-out chappals mysteriously appear despite no human use, and tie bells to a nearby illupai tree as a sign of prayer acceptance.
