Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam
About Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam
The temple was established in 2025 following sustained advocacy by Dr. A.S. Kobalen and his team, who secured a four-thousand-square-meter plot of land from the Jakarta government in a central location within the city. The construction process involved a distinctive collaborative approach to design and craftsmanship. The temple employed forty-five sculptors (sirphi) from Tamil Nadu, India, under their leader's direction, working alongside local laborers. The architectural vision blends multiple cultural traditions: the main temple incorporates Indian design principles, the multipurpose hall (Kumara Dharsan Mandabam) draws from Javanese Hindu culture, and the entrance gate reflects Balinese Hindu aesthetics. This syncretism reflects the temple's role as a bridge between India and Indonesia's Hindu communities.
Architecture and Key Features
The temple's most striking element is the Raja Gopuram (temple tower) named Visera Gopuram, which rises forty meters in height. A twenty-meter-tall statue of Lord Murugan stands before it, serving as a focal point for devotees approaching the temple. The construction incorporates traditional elements including planned installations of a Kodi Maram (flagstaff), silver vessels (Kodam), and multiple shrines dedicated to different manifestations of Murugan known as the Arupadai Vidu. The multipurpose hall provides space for community gatherings and cultural activities. The temple's design represents ongoing construction work, with various ritual elements and decorative installations still in progress as of the sources' date.
Worship and Festivals
The temple observes several significant days throughout the year dedicated to different deities. Kiruthigai, celebrated during the Krithika star, honors Lord Murugan with special ritual bathing (abhishekam), adornment (alankaram), and lamp offerings (deepa aradhana). Shashti, falling on the sixth day after the new moon, is another occasion when devotees fast and participate in fire rituals (homams) seeking Murugan's blessings. The temple also marks Poornima (full moon day) with worship of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, and Chathurthi (the fourth day after new moon) with observances for Lord Ganesha. Navarathri, the nine-day festival honoring the divine feminine, is celebrated with sponsored ritual sponsorships available to devotees. Thaipusam, a major festival in the Murugan tradition, is also observed at the temple.
Visiting the Temple
The temple welcomes visitors daily between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM through a booking system. Advance reservations are required to arrange your visit during these hours. The temple is located at Jalan Bedugul No. 2 in Kalideres, West Jakarta. Visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as is customary in Hindu temples. Shoes are typically removed before entering the inner sanctum. The temple shop offers religious items and materials for worship. Bharatanatyam dance classes are also available at the facility, providing cultural engagement alongside spiritual practice. Donations support the ongoing completion of the temple's construction and maintenance of its facilities.
Spiritual Significance
As a newly established temple in a major Southeast Asian city, Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam holds particular meaning for those maintaining Hindu traditions away from South Asia. The temple provides a space for the performance of traditional rituals and observance of the religious calendar according to Tamil and broader Hindu practice. For visitors, the temple offers darshan (sacred viewing) of Lord Murugan and the opportunity to participate in or witness the special poojas conducted throughout the year. The site represents both a place of personal devotion and a symbol of the Hindu community's presence and contributions to Jakarta's multicultural society.
