According to the temple's historical account, the kingdom of Gurugram was struck by a devastating smallpox epidemic that caused widespread suffering among the people. The king, moved by the plight of his subjects, prayed earnestly to Goddess Durga for intervention. In response to his devotion, the goddess appeared before him in the form of Sheetla Mata and instructed him to build a temple in her honor. Following this divine guidance, King Prithviraj established the first shrine dedicated to Sheetla Mata as a place where devotees could seek her protection from disease.
