About Semmeninathar Karumbeswarar Temple
This ancient Shiva temple, estimated between 1000–2000 years old, stands on the banks of the Kollidam River in Tirukkanur. The presiding deity, Semmeninathar (also called Karumbeswarar), is a Swayambhu Lingam believed to have manifested when Goddess Parvathi's penance pleased Lord Shiva, who appeared as a crimson flame. The divine consort, Sivayoganayaki or Soundaryanayaki, is represented by an idol carved from Saligrama stone. The temple features a three-tiered east-facing Rajagopuram and houses numerous subsidiary shrines including those for Vinayaka, Muruga, Ardhanareeswarar, Brahma, Chandikeshwarar, Durga, Mahavishnu, and the four Nayanmars. The temple is praised in Thevaram hymns by saints Tirugnana Sambandar and Tirunavukkarasar, making it the 56th Shiva temple on the northern bank of the Cauvery celebrated in sacred poetry.
