About S. Pudur Sanath Kumareswarar Temple

According to temple tradition, Kubera once lost his wealth and status after being led astray by temptation and committing a transgression. Broken in spirit and exhausted, he sought counsel from the Saptha Rishis—seven sages—who directed him to this sacred location. After bathing in the Soma Theertham and worshipping Lord Shiva and Mother Soundarya Nayaki, Kubera regained all that he had lost and was restored to his position as the lord of wealth and guardian of the northern direction.

The temple's deeper narrative traces Kubera's origins to a soul named Gunanidhi, who in an earlier life squandered his father's wealth through misdeeds. Reduced to poverty with his mother, Gunanidhi attempted theft from a temple kitchen during Shivrathri but was caught and died from the beating that followed. However, because he had kindled a lamp in the temple—a single act of devotion—he was spared by Shiva's attendants and eventually reborn. Through intense penance in his new life as Dhaman, he earned Lord Shiva's direct darshan and was ultimately elevated to his role as Kubera, the chief of all wealth.

Worship and Spiritual Significance

This temple attracts devotees seeking recovery of lost possessions and restoration of lost circumstances. Worshippers believe that sincere prayer to the lord and mother here can help retrieve what has been misplaced or taken away. The temple's teaching emphasizes that dharma—righteous conduct and law—cannot be compromised; those who stray from it lose not only material wealth but also inner peace, yet redemption remains possible through genuine devotion and penance.

Devotees typically perform abhisheka (ritual bathing of the deity) and offer cloth garments as expressions of gratitude and reverence. The practice of lighting lamps, as highlighted in the temple's own narrative, holds particular spiritual weight here.
