The temple's origins are traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, though the precise period of its establishment remains disputed. Later historical records indicate that the Maratha ruler Daulat Rao Scindia undertook restorations, and the shrine received support from the Garhwal and Katyuri dynasties. Daily Worship and Darshan

The temple operates on seasonal schedules. During summer months (roughly May to September), darshan is available from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In winter (October to April), hours shift to 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A midday closure occurs from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM year-round. Darshan wait times typically range from 30 minutes to one hour during peak pilgrimage seasons.

Early morning visits, particularly between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, offer the most tranquil experience. The morning aarti—the ritual of worship with light and offerings—coincides with sunrise, and the air remains fresh with fewer crowds. This timing allows visitors to participate in or witness the primary daily ritual in a contemplative atmosphere.

The best seasons to visit are winter (November to February) and the spring and autumn months when weather is pleasant and stable. The monsoon season should be avoided due to landslide risk in the region and the increased crowds during peak pilgrimage periods.
