About Neelkanth Mahadev

Perched atop a hill near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple stands as a significant pilgrimage site rooted in Hindu mythology. According to legend, this is where Lord Shiva drank the halahala poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), an act that saved the universe from destruction and earned him the epithet 'Neelkanth' (blue-throated). The temple's elevated location amid lush Himalayan terrain creates a serene spiritual atmosphere, enhanced by the presence of a natural spring believed to purify the soul. The journey to the temple winds through Rajaji National Park, offering glimpses of wildlife and natural beauty. Visitors must ascend numerous steps through natural terrain to reach the sanctum, a climb that symbolizes the spiritual effort required in one's devotional journey. Photography is prohibited inside the inner sanctum to preserve the sanctity of worship.
