About Puzhakkal Dharmashastha Temple

The temple stands among Kerala's ancient shrines, established over 1,700 years ago. It occupies a serene location on the northern bank of the Puzhakkal River, approximately five kilometers northwest of Thrissur city, positioned along the Guruvayur–Kunnamkulam–Kozhikode route. The temple faces west, and its setting within Puzhakkal village—near the border of Ayyanthole Grama Panchayat and Thrissur Corporation—places it at the heart of a living community. A majestic arayal (sacred fig tree) stands prominently before the temple; in Hindu tradition, this tree is believed to embody the Trimurti, with Brahma dwelling at its crown, Vishnu in the middle, and Shiva at the base. Devotees consider it auspicious to offer prayers and circumambulate this tree seven times each morning.

Rituals, Offerings, and Daily Practice

The temple conducts several important ceremonies throughout the year. Bali Tharpanam—ancestral offerings performed on the riverbank—holds particular spiritual significance and draws devotees seeking to honor their forebears. A dedicated Balitharpana counter operates south of the main shrine for this purpose. The temple also performs Chorunu (the ritual feeding of rice to infants for the first time), Thulabharam (offerings of materials equivalent to one's body weight), and Bhajana (devotional singing). Additional regular observances include Neeyabhishekam (ritual oil anointment), Udayasthamana Pooja (worship from sunrise to sunset), Shanishwara Pooja conducted on Saturdays, and Karyasadhya Pushpanjali performed on Wednesdays. Devotees make offerings of coconuts and oil lamps at designated points along the pathway, with a kanikka (offering) counter conveniently positioned nearby.

Festivals and Observances

The temple's principal festival is Painkuni Utram Vilakku, celebrated on the Utram star day in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April). Other significant observances include Mandalakalam, Karkkidaka Vavu, Thulam Vavu, and Maha Shivaratri. Unlike many Kerala temples, Puzhakkal Dharmasastha does not observe a traditional flag-hoisting festival (kodiyettam), and consequently no flagpole has been installed. The absence of a large sacrificial pit (bali kallu) and the notably small bali peetha (sacrificial stone) allow worshippers to maintain a clear view of the main idol even from outside the sanctum.

Facilities and Amenities

The temple is well-equipped to receive visitors. A spacious open ground in front serves as parking for vehicles. The Devaswom Oottupura (temple dining hall) is located adjacent to the Balitharpana counter, offering meals to devotees. Bathing facilities are available, and the temple can accommodate up to 500 people at a time. Stone steps lead down from the arayal tree to the temple courtyard, guiding visitors into the shrine. The temple is managed by a committee of local community members, ensuring both its upkeep and the preservation of its cultural practices.

Visiting Information

The temple is situated at Puzhakkal, Thrissur district, Kerala, approximately five kilometers northwest of Thrissur city. Visitors approaching from the direction of Guruvayur will find it along the main route. Modest dress is customary when entering Hindu temples; women typically wear sarees or salwar kameez, and men wear dhotis or simple clothing. Footwear should be removed before entering the sanctum. The temple welcomes devotees throughout the year, with particular crowds during festival periods and the Mandalakalam season (the forty-day period preceding major festivals). Those planning to make offerings or participate in specific rituals are advised to inquire at the temple office regarding timing and procedures. Contact information is available through the temple's official channels for advance arrangements.
