About Pura Dalem

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal stands as one of three temples within the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary complex in Ubud, Bali. The temple is dedicated to worshiping Hyang Widhi in the personification of Shiva, the Recycler or Transformer. Constructed approximately in 1350, the temple complex plays a vital role in the spiritual life of local communities. The sanctuary is distinguished by its elaborate depictions of Balinese demonic figures, particularly the iconic statue of Rangda, the Demon Queen, portrayed with unkempt hair, bared teeth, and sagging breasts. The temple area serves as home territory for one of the Monkey Forest's five groups of crab-eating macaques, creating a unique intersection of spiritual and natural spaces. The temple also hosts Kecak fire dance performances, making it a significant cultural attraction beyond its religious importance.
