Pura Agung Kentel Gumi
About Pura Agung Kentel Gumi
The temple's establishment is traditionally linked to Mpu Kuturan, a significant spiritual figure in Balinese history. According to local accounts preserved in the lontar texts, Mpu Kuturan drove a sacred stake or post into the earth at this location, designating it as the spiritual centre and foundation of Bali. This act occurred during a period of considerable upheaval, when the island was troubled by internal conflict and disorder. The temple's founding is associated with the reign of Maya Denawa, a ruler whose period of authority lasted from approximately 962 to 975 CE. Through Mpu Kuturan's spiritual work, stability and order were restored to Balinese society, and from this restoration the temple's name emerged.
Temple Complex and Architecture
Pura Agung Kentel Gumi comprises a substantial complex spread across approximately fifty are (a traditional Balinese land measurement). The temple is organised into three distinct groupings of shrines and structures. The main temple, Pura Agung Kentel Gumi itself, contains around nineteen sacred structures known as palinggih. Adjacent to this are Pura Maspahit, which houses five palinggih, and Pura Masceti, containing seven palinggih. These three groups occupy the innermost sanctuary area of the complex, separated from one another by traditional boundary markers.
Beyond the inner sanctum, the temple grounds include additional structures: the Perantenan Suci (a sacred space), the Bale Paebatan (which borders the middle courtyard), and Pura Bale Agung (which borders the outer courtyard). The temple has undergone renovation work in recent years, though specific details of ongoing restoration efforts are not fully documented in available sources.
Worship and Observance
The primary ritual calendar at Pura Agung Kentel Gumi centres on the Piodalan Wrespati Umanis Wuku Dungulan, the temple's principal festival day. This observance follows the Balinese calendar system and marks the occasion when devotees gather to make offerings and seek blessings. As a major temple serving the spiritual needs of the wider Hindu community across Bali, the temple draws worshippers from throughout the island during significant ritual occasions.
The temple functions as a place where devotees come to seek spiritual connection and to make offerings in honour of the divine creative force. Visitors should be aware that as an active place of worship, the temple maintains protocols regarding appropriate dress and behaviour; modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is customary, and visitors should approach the inner sanctum with respect and reverence.
