About Pokkunny Siva Temple
This venerable Hindu temple honors Lord Shiva and forms part of Kerala's network of 108 significant Shiva sanctuaries. According to tradition, Lord Parasurama himself installed the Shiva Linga at the pond known as Perumkulam in Alathur. The temple was constructed by the ruler of the Kollamkodu kingdom. The shrine's distinctive feature is its positioning within the vast Perumkulam pond, with access to the temple structure maintained via a pathway. The temple exemplifies Kerala's architectural style and stands at an elevation of approximately 132 meters. Historically, the temple was patronized by the king of Kollengode Palace, and the deity Vadavannoor Thevar (Pokkunny Siva) held special significance as the ruler's favored manifestation of the divine.
