About Nilakkal Sree Mahadeva Temple

Located in Nilakkal within Pathanamthitta district in Kerala's eastern region, this Hindu temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is venerated in two distinct forms: Ugramoorthy (the fierce aspect) and Mangala Pradayakan (the auspicious aspect). According to local tradition, the temple was established by Pandya kings who frequented the Nilakkal forest for hunting. The shrine holds spiritual significance as devotees believe Lord Shiva bestows blessings upon his son Lord Ayyappa to combat evil forces. The temple features two sub-deities: Lord Kannimoola Ganapathi and Nandi. During the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, the temple attracts devotees from Kerala and other states, making it a vital waystation on their spiritual journey.
