Nava Puliyur Temples
About Nava Puliyur Temples
Chidambaram, also known as Perumpatrapuliyur or Thillai, houses the Nataraja Temple and represents the Space element among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams—the five temples dedicated to Shiva's cosmic elements. The temple contains five sabhas, or halls: the Chitsabha, Kanakasabha, Devasabha, Nritta Sabha, and Raja Sabha. Beyond the primary worship of Nataraja, the temple maintains dedicated pujas for both Patanjali and Vyaghrapada. The puja offered to Patanjali is called Vaitheeka, while that for Vyaghrapada is known as Pushparchana.
Cuddalore and Vellar: Temples Two and Three
The Pataleeswarar Temple at Cuddalore Puthu Nagar Railway Station forms the second station of the circuit. Known as Thirupathiripuliyur because the temple tree is the Pathiri and because Vyaghrapada worshipped here, the shrine is dedicated to Pataleesvarar with the goddess Periyanayaki. This temple is counted among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams—ancient shrines celebrated in Tamil devotional hymns.
The third temple, Thirukumaresar, stands on the banks of the Vellar River in an area also called Rajendirapattinam. Named Erukathampuliyur for its Vellerukkai tree and Vyaghrapada's worship there, it enshrines Neelakandesvarar and the goddess Neelamalarkanni. This location holds additional significance as the birthplace of Tiru Nilakanta Yazhpanar, who has a separate shrine within the temple complex. Like Chidambaram, this temple too is among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
The Festival of Thaippusam
Thaippusam marks the prescribed time for undertaking the Nava Puliyur pilgrimage. On this day, devotees traditionally visit the nine temples to complete the spiritual circuit that Vyaghrapada and Patanjali are said to have established. The festival carries deep significance within the tradition, as it commemorates the day when these two sages received Shiva's instruction to worship at these nine locations.
Planning Your Visit
The Nava Puliyur circuit spans multiple locations across Tamil Nadu, requiring careful planning to visit all nine temples. Thaippusam is the most auspicious time for the pilgrimage, though individual temples may be visited at other times. Visitors should dress modestly when entering temple premises, removing footwear at designated areas as is customary in Hindu temples. Many of these temples are among the Paadal Petra Sthalams, indicating their antiquity and continued importance in Tamil religious life.
Specific details regarding current darshan timings, facilities, and accessibility for individual temples should be confirmed locally, as these vary by location and may change seasonally. The temples are distributed across different districts, so planning transportation between sites is essential for those undertaking the full circuit.
The Spiritual Significance
The Nava Puliyur journey represents more than a physical pilgrimage. Devotees who complete the circuit are said to gain insight into the unity of Shiva's different forms and manifestations. The connection between Vyaghrapada and Patanjali—two figures who transcended their unusual physical forms through devotion—offers a model for spiritual aspiration. Their worship at these nine temples, and the subsequent completion at Srirangam, creates a comprehensive spiritual path rooted in Tamil Shaiva tradition.
