About Nalukulangara Devi Temple
Located in the Thuravoor area of Alappuzha district, this sacred temple enshrines the deity Bhadrakali alongside subsidiary deities including Shiva, Subrahmanya, Ganpati, and Veerabhadra. According to local tradition, over a thousand years ago Brahmin refugees from Karnataka were granted refuge in the region by local rulers. A spiritual ascetic subsequently established the temple by invoking Bhadrakali on a stone near a sacred tank, with the deity's installation occurring on the Pooram nakshatra day of Makaram month. The temple gained prominence after receiving royal sanction during the reign of Maharaja Kartik Thirunal Rama Varma in the 940-41 Malayalam calendar period, when Divan Sri Rajaakeshavadasan issued an order permitting all community members to worship regardless of caste. The annual Nalukulangara Pooram festival spans nine days, commencing on Rohini nakshatra and concluding on Pooram nakshatra in Makaram month, featuring traditional Kerala music, temple arts, and grand processions.
