About Mukthi Natheshwara Temple

This lesser-known Chola temple was constructed during the reign of Emperor Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1122 CE), as documented by Tamil inscriptions within the sanctuary. The temple exemplifies single-tier Dravidian architectural style with a sanctum housing a Shiva Lingam, preceded by an antrala, maha mandapa, and mukha mandapa supported by four pillars. The exterior walls display remarkable carvings depicting Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, Nataraja with distinctive hairstyle, Vishnu, Vinayaka, Dakshinamoorthy, Venugopala, and Mahishasura Mardini. The ceiling features intricate carvings of the Ashtadikpalas. A sculptural representation of King Rajendra Chola stands beside a tall pillar near the entrance. The temple underwent restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India to preserve its ancient character. Nandi faces the sanctum from an elevated platform, and a flag pillar stands in the forecourt. The site remains a protected monument under ASI's Karnataka division.
