About Mayiladuthurai Aiyaarappar Temple

Located in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, this historic Shiva temple is dedicated to Lord Mayuranathaswamy, whose name derives from the Sanskrit word for peacock. The main sanctum houses a lingam as the primary icon, with the temple's spiritual significance rooted in the legend of Parvathi's devotion to Shiva at this sacred site. The temple features a nine-tiered Rajagopuram and a Tridala vimana above the sanctum sanctorum. The presiding deity is also known as Aadhi Mayuranathar, and the temple contains separate shrines for Lord Nataraja and Mayilamman. The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns by saints Ganasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar, and by Arunagiriar in Tirupugazh. It is recognized as the 39th Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Cauvery River mentioned in Thevaram literature. The sacred tree is a mango tree, and the temple follows the Kamika Agama tradition.
