About Markandeya Temple
Located near Markandeshwar Sahi on Brahmagiri Road in Puri, this sacred Shiva temple is one of the 52 Shiva shrines in India and forms part of the Panch Tirthas (Five Pilgrimages) of Puri. According to mythology, Lord Shiva saved Rishi Markandeya from danger at sea, after which the sage installed a Shivalinga at the exact spot and began his meditation. The Ganga Dynasty constructed the present white-colored temple structure around the 12th century. The temple features elaborate carvings and stands adjacent to the Markandeya Sarovar, a rectangular tank enclosed by laterite stone walls that serves as the starting point of the Puri pilgrimage. Rituals including Mundan Kriya and Pinda Dana are performed on the tank's steps, and major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Rishi Panchami, and Sankranti are celebrated with great fervor.
