About the temple

Markandeshwar Temple in Puri is a 12th-century shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to mark the spot where the deity saved sage Markandeya from peril. One of fifty-two sacred Shiva temples in India and a key pilgrimage site, it stands adjacent to the famous Markandeya Sarovar tank. The shrine draws devotees through the day for darshan and aarti, with the atmosphere reaching its peak during the evening rituals and on festival days when special pujas are performed.
