Nestled in a sacred forest grove in southwestern Kerala, Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple stands as the largest serpent temple in the state and a major centre of Naga worship. The temple is distinguished by its unique management by a hereditary female custodian (Amma/Valiamma), a rare tradition in Hindu temples. Devotees, particularly couples seeking fertility, visit to worship Lord Nagaraja and participate in thanksgiving ceremonies upon the birth of children, often offering new snake idols as votive gifts. The temple grounds feature thousands of stone serpent images lining the pathways through the dense sacred grove. A special turmeric paste available at the temple is traditionally credited with healing properties. The site is believed to have been blessed by Lord Parasurama, the legendary creator of Kerala.
