About Mangueshi Temple
Situated approximately 21 kilometers from Panaji in the Ponda taluk region of Goa, Mangueshi Temple stands as a major center of Shaiva worship. The temple's significance is rooted in mythology: according to the Sahyadri Khanda, Lord Shiva arrived in Goa after losing a game of dice with Goddess Parvati. When she pursued him, he transformed into a tiger to test her devotion. Her cry of "Trahi Mam Girisha" (Save me, Lord of the Mountains) eventually evolved into the deity's name, Manguesh. The temple serves as the kuladevata for numerous Goud Saraswat Brahmin families and other gotras. Devotional practices center on abhisheka rituals, bilva leaf offerings, mantra recitation, and evening aarti ceremonies. Major festivals drawing large congregations include Magha Purnima in February, Maha Shivaratri in February-March, and the Shravan Mondays of July-August.
