About Mahendrapalli Tirumeni Azhagar Temple

This Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands in Mahendrapalli village, historically known as Mayendirapalli and Koyiladippalayam. According to temple records, the original structure dates to the 6th century CE and was subsequently reconstructed by the Cholas during the 10th century, followed by extensive renovations undertaken by the Pandyas and Marathas. The presiding deity, Tirumeni Azhagar or Soma Sundareswarar, is uniquely celebrated as the handsome manifestation of Shiva—a distinction typically associated with Lord Vishnu. The temple holds puranic significance connected to Indira's curse and subsequent worship of Shiva for relief. A notable feature is the phenomenon during Panguni (March-April) when sunrays directly illuminate the main deity. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Chandikeswara, Vinayaka, Muruga, Kasiviswanatha, and other deities. The most recent consecration ceremony occurred on January 22, 1999. Saint Tirugnanasambandar praised this temple in his Thevaram hymns, establishing it as the sixth Shiva temple on the northern bank of the Cauvery River mentioned in classical Tamil devotional literature.
