Achalpuram Shivalokathyagar Temple

This temple holds particular importance within Tamil Shaivism as a Paadal Petra Sthalam—a shrine praised in the devotional hymns of the Alvars and Nayanmars, the great saints of the tradition. Saint Tirugnanasambandar, one of the foremost Nayanmar saints, composed Thevaram verses in praise of this sanctuary. It stands as the fifth Shiva temple on the northern bank of the Cauvery River to receive such sacred recognition through his hymns.

The temple is traditionally regarded as the place where Tirugnanasambandar attained mukti, or spiritual liberation. According to local tradition, the saint merged with Shiva's divine light at this location during his wedding ceremony, an event attended by the goddess Achal-Amma herself, who bestowed sacred ash upon the assembled devotees.
