About Tiruvetkalam Pasupatheswarar Temple

This venerable temple enshrines Lord Shiva worshipped as Pasupatheswarar, accompanied by his consort Nalla Nayaki (also known as Satgunambal). The shrine spans two acres and features multiple sanctums, with the central shrine housing the Swayambhu Murti of Pasupatheswarar. The temple is architecturally distinguished by a three-tiered Rajagopuram and intricate sculptures depicting Arjuna mythology. Originally constructed by Pallava kings, the temple underwent significant renovation in 1914 by Peddha Perumal Chettiar of Kanadukathan. According to Hindu legend, Arjuna performed rigorous penance at this sacred site and received the divine weapon Pasupatham from Lord Shiva, an event that established the deity's reverence as Pasupatheeswarar. The temple uniquely features shrines dedicated to both the Sun and Moon, representing cosmic balance, and is known for offering sand balls as prasad believed to aid in curing speech impediments.
