About Madhava Perumal temple

Located in the heart of Mylapore, this sacred temple stands as a beacon of spiritual devotion with roots tracing back to the 12th century. According to temple legend, Sage Bhrigu performed penance to atone for kicking Lord Vishnu, resulting in Goddess Lakshmi manifesting as Amirthavalli in the temple's sacred tank, Santhana Pushkarini. Upon reaching marriageable age, she was united with Lord Vishnu in his Madhava Perumal form, earning him the epithet 'Kalyana Perumal'. The temple also holds significance as the birthplace of Peyazhwar, one of the twelve Alvar saints of the 6th-9th century, who is believed to have emerged from the Manikairavam well within the temple premises. Constructed in traditional Dravidian architecture with a square sanctum and single-tiered gopuram, the temple features the sacred Punnai tree and maintains the Vaikhanasa tradition of worship.
