About Alwarpet Anjaneyar Temple
Located in Mylapore, this historic temple was constructed by Salivahana Chettiars from Mysore who migrated to the region in the 18th century with land granted by the Nawab of the Carnatic. The temple's origin is marked by the discovery of a self-manifested Hanuman idol during well-digging, prompting the Chettiars to build the shrine on that sacred spot. A shrine dedicated to Lord Rama was added to the complex in 1954. The temple is currently managed by the Arulmigu Anjeneya Aaliyah trust, operated by employees of the Tamil Nadu State Agriculture and Rural Development Bank Ltd. The shrine celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2000 and remains an active place of worship drawing devotees throughout the day, with special significance during evening rituals and festival celebrations.
