The Maa Samaleswari Temple stands as one of western Odisha's most significant spiritual centers, dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari, who is venerated as the Jagatjanani (Mother of the Universe) and protector of the region. Built in the 16th century under the Chauhan kings of Sambalpur, the temple exemplifies traditional Kalinga Nagara architectural style, featuring a towering Rekha Deula sanctum and Pidha Deula assembly hall. The sanctum houses an idol of the Goddess carved from black chlorite stone, adorned with ornaments, silk, and flowers. The temple complex includes smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Hanuman, and other deities. Beyond its architectural significance, the temple serves as the cultural nucleus of Sambalpur, with the city's name believed to derive from 'Samalai,' the Goddess's name. The temple plays a vital role during Nuakhai, the grand agrarian festival, when first harvested grains are ceremonially offered to the Goddess. Daily recitations of Chandi Patha and Durga Saptashati maintain centuries-old Tantric and devotional practices.
