Kottangal Devi Temple

The temple is renowned for its Padayani Mahotsavam, an elaborate festival that extends across two months. The celebration begins with the Chutkukatthikal ceremony on a Bharani day in the month of Dhanu (December–January) and concludes with the Valiya Padayani on a Bharani day in Makara (January–February). During this period, the temple becomes a centre for traditional performance and ritual art.

The Padayani features multiple Kolams—stylised masked performances representing different characters and deities. These include Yakshikolam, Palabhairavi, Arakiyakshi, Maruthakolam, Bishchikolam, Kalan Kolam, Bhairavi, and Maya Yakshi. The Valiya Padayani day itself draws particular significance, with performances of 101 Pala Bhairavikolams followed by appearances of 64, 32, and 16 Pala Bhairavis, along with Yakshi, Araki Yakshi, Maruta, and other traditional performers. The Tappumelam, a traditional percussion ensemble, provides the musical accompaniment throughout these celebrations. The festival also includes the Tirumumpil Vela ceremony and processions involving the local community and artisans from surrounding areas.

The temple is open to visitors during two daily periods: 05:00 to 10:30 in the morning and 17:00 to 19:30 in the evening. The best time to visit for those wishing to experience the temple's most significant observances is during the Bharani days falling within the Dhanu and Makara months, roughly December through February, when the Padayani Mahotsavam takes place.
