About Kottangal Devi Temple

Situated approximately two kilometers from Chungappara town in Pathanamthitta district, Kottangal Devi Temple is celebrated primarily for its Padayani Mahotsavam, a major annual festival. The festival begins with the Chutkukatthikal ceremony on Bharani day in the month of Dhanu (December-January) and concludes with the grand Valiya Padayani procession on Bharani day in Makara (January-February). The temple features diverse traditional Kolams including Yakshikolam, Palabhairavi, Arakiyakshi, Maruthakolam, Bishchikolam, Kalan Kolam, Bhairavi, and Maya Yakshi. The Tappumelam serves as the primary musical instrument during the Padayani celebrations. The festival involves elaborate processions and ceremonies conducted in the presence of the local community, with the Valiya Padayani featuring 101 Pala Bhairavikolams followed by additional Kolams and entertainers.
