Located in Mallappally within Pathanamthitta district in southern Kerala, the Thirumalida Swayambhoo Mahadeva Temple stands as a significant pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Shiva. Positioned on the picturesque eastern bank of the Manimala River, the temple is distinguished by its unique architectural style reminiscent of the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple. A remarkable feature is that it represents the sole Swayambhoo (self-manifested) temple oriented toward the west situated on riverbanks. The temple attracts thousands of devotees during Karkidakam (July-August) for the sacred Karkkidaka Vavubali ritual honoring ancestors. The most captivating celebration occurs during Maha Shivaratri, when the Manimala River's water level is at its lowest, allowing festivities to take place on the sandy riverbed. This occasion features the spectacular Mallappally Kavadiyattam, showcasing caparisoned elephants, elaborate processions, rhythmic drumbeats, and the Kavadi Thullal dance performed by devoted worshippers who have taken vows of sacrifice and gratitude to Lord Shiva.
