Keezhvelur Kediliappar Temple
About Keezhvelur Kediliappar Temple
Located in Keezhvelur, Nagapattinam district, this temple enshrines Kediliappar, a manifestation of Lord Shiva, with his consort Parvati worshipped as Vanamulai Amman. The temple features a seven-tiered Rajagopuram facing east, two concentric enclosures, and multiple shrines including those for Muruga, Nataraja, Somaskanda, Dakshinamurthy, and other deities. The sanctum houses an Akshayalinga and is considered a swayambumurthy. According to temple lore, Lord Muruga established the shrine after seeking Shiva's blessings to cleanse himself of sin, creating a sacred spring with his Vel weapon. The temple holds the distinction of being the 84th Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Cauvery praised in hymns by Saint Tirugnana Sambandar and is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. A Shiva Linga worshipped by Sage Agasthya remains within the temple grounds.
