Located in Thevur village within Tiruvarur District, Deva Pureeswarar Temple stands as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and the 202nd Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Deva Pureeswarar and Deva Gurunathar. According to temple lore, the Devas cleansed themselves of sin by worshipping Shiva here after Indra slew the demon Vritrasura, earning the deity the epithet Deva Pureeswarar. The temple features a rare sacred tree, the Kal Vazhai (a plantain variety), which grows from stones rather than soil. The shrine is one of 78 Maadakovils constructed on elevated ground by King Ko Chengat Chozha to prevent elephants from entering the sanctum.
