About Karni Mata Temple

Located in the town of Deshnoke in Rajasthan, Karni Mata Temple stands as the most significant pilgrimage destination for devotees of Charani Sagatis following restricted access to Hinglaj after India's partition. The temple was originally established around 1530 following Karni Mata's mahaprayan and was constructed during the 15th–20th centuries by Maharaja Ganga Singh, showcasing Rajput architectural style. The temple's distinctive feature is its population of over 25,000 sacred rats believed to be reincarnated devotees awaiting rebirth as humans. According to tradition, Karni Mata declared that her followers would transcend the death cycle and be reborn as rats within the temple premises before returning to human form. Devotees first offer prasad to the rats before consuming it themselves, believing this practice fulfills wishes and protects against various afflictions. The temple attracts thousands of pilgrims weekly seeking blessings and curious tourists from around the world, exemplifying what scholars describe as an environmentally conscious Hindu ethos.
