Kalleshwara Temple, Hire Hadagali
About Kalleshwara Temple, Hire Hadagali
This masterpiece of Western Chalukyan architecture was constructed during the reign of King Someshvara I (1042–1068 CE) by Demarasa, who served as prime minister to the Western Chalukya Empire. The temple, also known locally as Katte Basaveshwara, features meticulous carved details executed in soapstone, the primary building material of the original construction. Art historian Adam Hardy classifies the structure as representative of mainstream Western Chalukya architecture, though the tower over the shrine represents a later reconstruction. An old Kannada inscription dating to approximately 1057 CE references Bhimesvara-Demesvara and documents the genealogy of the Chalukya dynasty. The shrine draws devotees throughout the day for darshan and aarti, with evening rituals and festival celebrations attracting particularly large gatherings.
