Shri Guru Kottureshwara Temple
About Shri Guru Kottureshwara Temple
Shri Guru Kottureshwara Temple stands as a revered ancient sanctuary located in Kotturu, Kudligi taluk, Vijayanagara District, North Karnataka. The temple's spiritual significance centers on Lord Kottureshwara, believed to be Nandi in the form of a saint who arrived at the region (formerly called Sarasipura or Shikapura) to safeguard the Veerashaiva tradition and its devotees. The temple complex comprises four distinct Muttas: the Darbar or Doda Mutta serving as the principal shrine where Kottureshwara addressed devotees' concerns; the Murkal Mutta marking Nandi's initial descent; the Gachina Mutta where Kottureshwara meditated and attained Lord Shiva; and the Thotal Mutta commemorating divine blessings. The shrine attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, with peak seasons occurring from January through April. Major celebrations include the spectacular Rathotsava procession festival held in February or March, where the deity is carried in a palanquin and the ratha moves of its own accord, followed by devotees pulling it while offering garlands, coconuts, and bananas. Karthikotsava in December features six weeks of illumination with diyas, and Mahashivarathri draws significant devotional gatherings.
