Galtaji
About Galtaji
The defining feature of Galtaji is its system of seven sacred tanks, known locally as kunds, which are fed by a natural spring that emerges from the upper hills and descends through the complex. These kunds serve as the focal point for pilgrims, who bathe in them as an act of ritual purification. The Galta Kund itself holds particular significance and is considered the holiest of the seven; it is notable for having never dried up, according to local tradition. The presence of these natural water sources, combined with the temple's religious purpose, makes the site a place of both spiritual and practical importance for those who visit.
Hanuman and the Monkey Population
The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and has earned the colloquial name "Monkey Temple" or "Galwar Bagh" due to the substantial population of monkeys inhabiting the complex. Both rhesus macaques and langurs are found here. The monkeys have become as much a part of the temple's character as its architecture, though visitors should be aware that they are known to approach people aggressively in search of food and belongings. It is advisable to keep all items secured in bags and to avoid eating openly within the temple grounds, as the monkeys will attempt to snatch food from visitors.
Visiting Practicalities
The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with morning and evening aartis performed regularly. There is no entry fee. The best season to visit is October through March, when the climate is more temperate. The temple complex includes several structures worth noting: the Galwar Bagh Gate, a prominent pink-coloured entrance structure, serves as the main gateway, and within the complex are temples dedicated to Brahma and Vishnu alongside the primary Hanuman shrine. Visitors should dress modestly and be prepared for the hillside terrain, which involves some climbing and uneven surfaces.
Pilgrimage Festivals
The temple experiences its highest visitor numbers during Makar Sankranti and Kartik Poornima, when thousands of devotees arrive to bathe in the sacred kunds. These occasions are marked by the sounds of chants and religious hymns throughout the complex. The festivals draw primarily local pilgrims rather than tourists, maintaining the site's character as an active place of worship rather than a sightseeing destination.
Hiking and the Sun Temple
A hiking trail connects the temple to the western part of Jaipur city, beginning at the end of Suraj Pol Bazar Road. The hike takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and passes through a large stone archway painted in pink, from which views of Jaipur city are particularly striking. Along the route, hikers pass the Sun Temple, which offers a vantage point for viewing the sunset and provides views of Jaipur's fortifications. Alternatively, visitors can ascend from the temple itself through the mountain crevice, passing the highest sacred tank to reach the Sun Temple.
Getting There
The temple is located at Shri Galta Peetham, Galva Ashrama, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302031. It lies approximately 10 kilometres east of central Jaipur. Visitors can reach it by vehicle or by undertaking the hiking route from Suraj Pol Bazar Road. The coordinates are 26.8761, 76.1242 for those using GPS navigation.
