Mangla Devi Temple
About Mangla Devi Temple
Mangaladevi Temple stands in the Bolara locality of Mangalore, approximately three kilometers southwest of the city center. The temple is dedicated to Mangaladevi, a manifestation of Shakti, the divine feminine principle in Hinduism. According to tradition, the temple was constructed during the 9th century by Kundavarman, a prominent ruler of the Alupa dynasty, under the spiritual guidance of Matsyendranath. An alternative legend attributes the temple's original construction to Parashurama, one of Vishnu's ten avatars, with subsequent expansion by Kundavarman. The temple holds considerable antiquity and cultural significance, serving as the namesake for Mangalore city itself. Regular worship includes morning and afternoon poojas, evening aartis, and special observances such as Swayamvara Parvathy Homa. The temple hosts an annual Jathra festival and provides facilities for devotional services including annadhana (food offerings) on Fridays.
