About Ekteswar temple

Ekteswar temple stands as a distinctive religious structure in Bankura, West Bengal, enshrining a unique manifestation of Shiva known as Ekapaada Murthy. Constructed by the Rajas of Bishnupur, the temple was originally built using laterite stone with subsequent additions of sandstone and brick, creating a solid structure uncommon to Bengal's architectural traditions. The temple's design deviates from typical Bengali temple styles, and its top appears to have sustained damage over time. According to local mythology, Shiva meditated at this location to arbitrate a boundary dispute between the Bishnupur and Samantabhum kingdoms. The site is situated on the banks of the Dwarakeswar River and has become an important religious center where Charak Puja is celebrated with enthusiasm during the Bengali month of Choitro.
