Commonly known as Meenakshi Amman Temple, the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple stands on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai's city center. The temple's presiding deities are Meenakshi, an aspect of Parvati, and Sundareswarar, an aspect of Shiva. This ancient shrine is mentioned in Sangam literature and praised in sixth-century texts. The reconstructed temple complex spans 14 acres and is surrounded by 14 gopurams averaging 45-50 meters in height, with the southern gopuram reaching 51.9 meters (170 feet), making it the tallest. The sanctuary is adorned with sculptured pillars and intricate carvings throughout its sacred precincts.
