About Changu Narayan Temple

Changu Narayan Temple represents one of the most ancient Vishnu shrines in Nepal, believed to have been originally established during the early Licchavi period and constructed by King Haridatta Barma in the 4th century. The temple complex contains a significant sandstone pillar bearing inscriptions from King Manadeva (464–505 AD), marking the oldest known inscription in Nepal. After suffering damage from fire, the temple was reconstructed in 1702 AD by King Bhupalendra Malla, preserving its architectural and spiritual significance. The temple houses rare carvings depicting the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu and other deities, reflecting exceptional Nepalese craftsmanship. Beyond the main shrine dedicated to Lord Narayan, the courtyard contains additional shrines honoring Shiva, Chinna Masta (Kali), Ganesh, and Krishna. The site holds deep spiritual importance for pilgrims who seek blessings for protection from misfortune and prosperity.
