Bordowa Than
About Bordowa Than
The pilgrimage grounds contain several distinct sacred sites and structures. The Kirtan Ghar serves as a space for devotional singing and worship. The Doul Mandir and Sati Radhika Mandir are dedicated shrines within the complex. The Sankardev Abirvab Khetra marks the specific location associated with Sankardev's life. Visitors will also find the Hati Borha, Tembuwani Bondho, Podoshila Griha, and the sacred Akashi Ganga on the grounds. A museum dedicated to Batadrava Than's history and significance is also maintained at the site, along with the Sankardev Abirvab Khetra documentation.
Festivals and Observances
The Than observes several major festivals throughout the year. Doul Jatra, held in March, is regarded as Assam's earliest organised Holi celebration and was introduced by Sankardev as a means of spreading Bhakti devotion. Janmastami celebrates the birth of Krishna and draws significant numbers of devotees. Raas Mahotsav, the autumn festival associated with Krishna's divine play, is observed with community participation. Sankardeva Tithi commemorates the saint himself and holds particular importance for those devoted to his teachings and legacy. These festivals offer visitors a deeper engagement with the living spiritual traditions maintained at the site.
Planning Your Visit
The most pleasant season to visit Batadrava Than extends from October through March, when weather conditions are favourable for travel and outdoor exploration of the grounds. However, visiting during one of the major festivals—Janmastami, Raas Mahotsav, or Sankardeva Tithi—provides a richer cultural and spiritual experience, as these occasions draw the community together for worship and celebration.
The site is accessible by multiple routes. From Nagaon town, it lies approximately 16 kilometres away by road. The ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) operates a morning bus service departing Nagaon at 7:30 AM. Private vehicles and taxis run non-stop services daily between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM. For those arriving by air, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati is the nearest major airport, situated about 120 kilometres away. Haibargaon Railway Station near Nagaon, approximately 15 kilometres from the Than, serves as the nearest railway connection.
Accommodation and Facilities
Guest house facilities are available at Batadrava Than for visitors wishing to stay overnight. This allows for a more extended engagement with the site and participation in daily worship practices. The Than maintains an e-museum and e-book resources for those seeking deeper knowledge of Sankardev's life and teachings, as well as the history of the site itself.
Visitor Etiquette and Expectations
As a functioning pilgrimage centre and place of active worship, Batadrava Than operates according to the customs of Assamese Vaishnavite practice. Visitors should approach the sacred spaces with respect and reverence. Temples of this tradition typically expect modest dress and quiet, contemplative behaviour within the worship areas. Photography policies may vary across different sections of the grounds; it is advisable to observe signage or ask permission before photographing sacred spaces or ongoing rituals. The site welcomes both devotees and cultural visitors, though the primary purpose remains spiritual practice and community worship.
