Binsar Devta
About Binsar Devta
Historical records indicate that the temple was constructed during the 9th century under the patronage of King Kalyan Chand of the Chand Dynasty, a ruling house that left its mark across the Kumaon region. The temple's architecture reflects the Katyuri style, a building tradition associated with medieval temples of Uttarakhand. While local tradition preserves a legend attributing the temple's construction to the Pandavas, the documented history places its establishment firmly within the 9th–10th century period. This long continuity of worship and maintenance has allowed the temple to remain an active place of devotion across more than a thousand years.
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple maintains a structured daily schedule of worship centered on the Shiva Lingam. Five aartis mark the devotional day: the Mangala Aarti begins at 5:00 AM with the awakening of the deity through sacred hymns, bells, and conch shells. The Rudrabhishek follows at 6:00 AM, a ritualistic bathing of the Lingam accompanied by Vedic chanting. At midday, the Raj Bhog offering at 12:00 PM presents regional food preparations to the deity. The Sandhya Aarti at 6:00 PM takes place during twilight, illuminated by traditional oil lamps, while the Shayan Aarti at 8:00 PM concludes the day's worship with meditative rituals preparing the deity for rest. The temple remains open to visitors from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Festivals and Observances
The temple observes several significant festivals throughout the year. Mahashivratri, the night dedicated to Shiva, draws devotees for special worship. The month of Shravan, considered particularly auspicious for Shiva worship, sees increased pilgrimage and ritual activity. Guru Purnima honors the lineage of spiritual teachers, while Kartik Purnima marks another important observance. An annual Bhandara, a community feast, brings together devotees and visitors. The Vaikuntha Chaturdashi fair in June represents a major gathering at the temple, making this month a particularly significant time for visitation.
Best Times to Visit
June offers the opportunity to experience the Vaikuntha Chaturdashi fair, a major event drawing pilgrims to the temple. For those prioritizing weather conditions, September and October provide pleasant temperatures and clear skies, making these months ideal for trekking through the surrounding deodar forests and visiting the shrine. The cooler mountain climate differs markedly from the plains, and visitors should prepare accordingly with appropriate clothing for the altitude and season.
