Remind me

Dhanteras marks the opening day of the five-day Diwali festival, celebrated on the new moon night of the Hindu month Kartik. Devoted to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and to Dhanvantari, the divine physician and avatar of Vishnu, this auspicious day invites blessings of health, abundance and spiritual well-being into homes and hearts.

Significance

Dhanteras embodies the sacred principle that true wealth encompasses both material prosperity and physical vitality. According to ancient texts, on this day Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean during the churning of milk, bearing the nectar of immortality and the knowledge of Ayurveda. Simultaneously, Lakshmi's presence on this evening sanctifies commerce, trade and household treasures, reminding devotees that prosperity flows when paired with dharma and gratitude. The festival teaches that acquiring wealth is virtuous when it serves family welfare and charitable purposes, and that health—the greatest treasure—must be honored alongside material gain. Lighting diyas and purchasing precious metals on Dhanteras symbolizes the illumination of wisdom and the safeguarding of one's resources for righteous living.

How it's observed
