The temple's name derives from local legend: the Vedas themselves are said to have worshipped Shiva at this sacred site, giving rise to the name Vedaranyam, meaning 'forest of the Vedas.' The shrine holds distinctive canonical importance as the only temple to receive mention in all seven Thirumurais of the Tevaram, the 7th-century Tamil Shaiva devotional work composed by the Nayanar saints.
